NATIONAL RABIES CONTROL PROGRAMME (NRCP)
Achievements on National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP) during 2024-2025:
- On June 19–20, 2024, a specialized training session was conducted for 89 Medical Officers (MOs) focusing on the latest protocols and methods for rabies treatment. Dr. Ajit Shewale, Joint Director at the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), delivered an expert lecture on rabies, emphasizing the importance of updated clinical practices in managing this preventable yet fatal disease.
This initiative aligns with the National Rabies Control Programme's (NRCP) objective to eliminate dog-mediated rabies by 2030. The program includes strategies such as ensuring the availability of Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) and Anti-Rabies Serum (ARS) at all health facility levels, capacity building for healthcare professionals, strengthening surveillance of animal bites and rabies cases, and enhancing diagnostic capabilities.
Dr. Shewale's involvement underscores NCDC's commitment to improving rabies management through continuous education and collaboration with healthcare professionals across India.
- On 28th September 2024, in observance of World Rabies Day, the State Action Plan for Rabies Elimination (SAPRE) for Mizoram was officially launched by Hon’ble Health Minister Pi Lalrinpuii. The event was attended by key officials, including the Mission Director of the National Health Mission (NHM), Joint Directors of the Health & Family Welfare Department, and the Director and Joint Directors of the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Department. The event was supported by the UNDP.
The SAPRE outlines a comprehensive strategy to eliminate dog-mediated rabies in the state, aligning with India's national goal of zero human rabies deaths by 2030. This initiative is part of the broader "One Health" approach, which integrates human, animal, and environmental health efforts to effectively combat rabies. The theme for World Rabies Day 2024, "Breaking Rabies Boundaries," underscores the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration and innovative strategies in rabies elimination efforts. The launch of SAPRE marks a significant step forward in Mizoram's commitment to achieving a rabies-free future.
- On 28th September 2023, in observance of World Rabies Day, a live talk show was organized at Doordarshan Kendra Aizawl. The panel featured Dr Vanlalrengpuia, State Nodal Officer for the National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP); Dr Lalchhanhima, Veterinary Officer and Dr Rebecca Lalmuanpuii, State Veterinary Consultant for Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP). The panelists discussed strategies for rabies prevention, the significance of vaccination, and the role of community engagement in achieving the global goal of eliminating dog-mediated human rabies deaths by 2030.
- Anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) & Anti-rabies serum (ARS): As per the Record of Proceedings (ROP) for the year 2024–25, a total of 4,440 vials of Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV) and 100 vials of Anti-Rabies Serum (ARS) have been procured for distribution across various health facilities in Mizoram. This strategic procurement aims to enhance the state's capacity to manage and prevent rabies through timely and effective treatment options.
- A training program on the 'One Health' approach was conducted for District Data Managers from 8th to 11th October 2024. This initiative aimed to enhance their capacity in integrating human, animal, and environmental health data for effective disease surveillance and response. The training emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts across sectors to address health challenges comprehensively.
- The monthly NRCP report is systematically collected, compiled, and submitted to the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) as per the established guidelines of the National Rabies Control Programme (NRCP). These reports are integral to monitoring and evaluating the progress of rabies control efforts across the country. The standardized reporting formats, such as the State Monthly Report (NRCP-M02) and the District Level Report are accessible on the official NRCP portal for reference and use.
